Pubblicato in occasione del 70° compleanno di Hubert Houben, questo volume si concentra sull’oltrepassare dei confini come uno dei temi cari al festeggiato. Prendendo come punto di partenza un concetto di confine come costruzione sociale, le autrici e gli autori affrontano casi selezionati di scavalcamento di confini spaziali, culturali e legali durante il Medioevo. La complessità e la multiperspettività che ne derivano riflettono metodi e tradizioni di ricerca diversi, che insieme rivelano un ampio spettro di approcci possibili al tema dell’attraversamento dei confini.

Published on the occasion of Hubert Houben’s 70th birthday, this volume focuses on border crossings as one of the topics dear to the jubilarian. By starting from a concept of borders as a social construct, the authors look at selected cases of transcending spatial, cultural and legal boundaries in the Middle Ages. The resulting complexity and multi-perspectivity reflects different research methods and traditions, revealing a broad spectrum of possible approaches to the topic of border crossings.

Francesco Panarelli è professore ordinario di Storia medievale presso l’Università della Basilicata. Si occupa principalmente di storia del monachesimo e di storia del Mezzogiorno italiano, con una preferenza per l’età normanno-sveva.

Francesco Panarelli is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Basilicata. He mainly deals with the history of monasticism and the history of the Italian Mezzogiorno, with a preference for the Norman and Hohenstaufen period.

Kristjan Toomaspoeg è professore associato di Storia medievale presso l’Università del Salento (Lecce). Si occupa della Storia del Tardo Medioevo, con focus sui rapporti tra il Nord e il Sud dell’Europa, la storia del Regno di Sicilia, quella degli ordini religioso-militari, la frontier history e border history.

Kristjan Toomaspoeg is associate professor of Medieval History at the University of Salento (Lecce). He deals with the History of the Late Middle Ages, with a focus on relations between the North and South of Europe, the history of the Kingdom of Sicily, that of military orders, Frontier History and Border History.

Georg Vogeler è professore di Umanistica Digitale (Digital Humanities) all'Università di Graz. Si occupa della documentazione amministrativa del tardo Medioevo, della pratica di governo di Federico II, nonché della diplomatica ed ecdotica digitale.

Georg Vogeler is Professor of Digital Humanities at the University of Graz. He works on the written material of late medieval financial administration, the ruling practices of Emperor Frederick II, and digital diplomatics and text edition.

Kordula Wolf è ricercatrice presso l’Istituto Storico Germanico di Roma. I suoi interessi di ricerca comprendono la storia altomedievale dell’Italia meridionale, le relazioni tra cristiani e musulmani nel Mediterraneo centrale e border studies.

Kordula Wolf is a researcher at the German Historical Institute in Rome. Her main research interests include the early and high medieval history of southern Italy, Christian-Muslim relations in the central Mediterranean, and border studies.
