Pietro Gasparri e il fascismo

Abstract: The article aims to shed light on the biography of the cardinal Pietro Gasparri and his relation with the fascist dictatorship between the "Fasci di Combattimento" foundation year (1919) and the cardinal’s death (1934). In the first part (1919–1925), it focuses on Gasparri’s considerations of fascism and Mussolini himself in the years of its rise and affirmation. In the second part (1926–1929), it highlights his leading role in the long road driving the Catholic Church) and the italian state (Mussolini on its behalf) to sign the 1929 Concordato. In the third part (1930–1934), it analyses the years of his sunset – after his resignation as Pius XI’s Secretary of State – and namely the question of his Memoirs.
