Auge und Ohr. Zur Ästhetik und Funktion der Féerie im Kontext der Alteritätsinszenierungen in Vernes Roman "Michel Strogoff" (1876)

Abstract Jules Verne’s adventure novel Michel Strogoff (1876) is not only a medium of surveying and world exploration, it also contains passages that approach the theatre genre of féerie, which was extremely popular in the 19th century. If the novel is already characterised by a mapping of foreign spaces and the surveying of foreign peoples who often appear exotic and form groups, of which the most prominent example is probably that of the „Gypsies,“ this aspect is especially evident in the féerie inherent in the novel, which later, however, resulted in its own form, i. e. the spectacular. The article shows the stagings of alterity in an intermedial and media comparative perspective.
