Poggio Bracciolini – Lorenzo Valla – Niccolò Perotti
Ein Beispiel für invektive Dynamiken in der Humanistengemeinschaft Italiens (1451–54)
Abstract The well-known dispute between two of the most important intellectuals of the Quattrocento, Poggio Bracciolini and Lorenzo Valla, had other protagonists who also played an important role in this conflict. The intervention of these scholars in the dispute can possibly be traced back to specific social dynamics that found their realisation through artful invective as an act of communication. The aim of this paper will be to shed light on invective dynamics in the humanist community in the mid-15th century. This will be done by means of the invectives of Niccolò Perotti and Poggio Bracciolini, which build on the already existing literary duel between Poggio and Lorenzo Valla. With regard to these invectives, the article takes three aspects into consideration: the display of erudition and knowledge of Latin, the unfolding of a cultural-methodological generational conflict, and Perotti’s programmatic attempt to reinforce and affirm Poggio as a group-forming prototypical enemy image.
