New Fakes

Art(h)urische Wahrheiten

Abstract In this paper, we trace the trajectory of stories about Arthur / Artus from the Anglo-Norman world to the German-speaking world. However, our focus is not on the traditional question of what is true or false in these stories, nor are we concerned with the binary opposition between fictionality and factuality. Instead, we are interested in the productive use of narratives that can be considered “new fakes”, new forms of misrepresentation that, precisely because of their nature, hold potential. We offer suggestions and propose ideas for addressing this phenomenon within literary and cultural studies.
