Über rhetorische Evidenzproduktion im Marienleben des apokryphen ‚Pseudo-Matthäusevangeliums‘ (PsMt I-XII)

Abstract The apocryphal Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, originally dating from the 7th century and well-known throughout the Middle Ages, describes the early life of the virgin Mary. In particular, the narrative of Mary’s life elucidates the relationship between evidence and rhetoric. Under the conditions of evidence, speech that reveals the divine requires no support from the art of rhetoric. However, in conditions of uncertainty rhetoric strategies are crucial to establishing certainty and consent to the truth. Taking five famous episodes from the life of the virgin Mary as examples, the article explores the linkage of evidence and rhetoric.
