Grosse Geschichte und kleines Schicksal. Historische Ereignisse beschrieben in den Gesuchen beteiligter Menschen

Abstract Many supplications in the registers of the Poenitentiaria Apostolica – for a long time strictly locked away and inaccessible to research – contain allusions to historical events. Whoever had taken part in fighting as a clergyman (forbidden of course) might perhaps describe episodes, which do not unfold at just any time, anywhere and anyhow; they happen during the Turkish conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the siege of Rhodes in 1480 or the battle of Pavia in 1525. In such cases, the intimate connection between major history and minor fates, which usually has no chance of being handed down, for once becomes tangible: here, the generation lived by humans and the epoch conceived by historians coincide. Named in various supplications, whole historical horizons now emerge: the Ottoman Wars, The Hundred Years’ War, the Burgundian Wars, the Wars of the Roses, the Hussite Wars, the Swabian War, the Sacco di Roma of 1527 by the troops of Charles V.
