Die Jubiläen von 1450 und 1475 im Spiegel des Archivs der Pönitentiarie

Abstract The Holy Years of 1450 and 1475 are considered from the perspective of the Penitentiary’s supplication registers. According to a definition of Leo X, this was the place, in qua mo rum censura et animarum precipue salus vertitur. The evaluation of the petitions confirms that the rush of pilgrims in the Holy Year 1450 exceeded all expectations. In addition to the French, a particularly large number of Germans came to Rome. The amount of data allows a statistical evaluation, and the texts tell many fine stories from the everyday life of pilgrims to Rome. In 1475 – due to the plague and the Turkish expansion – only half as many pilgrims came. An analysis of the applications for exemption from birth defects reveals significant regional differences in where they originate. Around 1475, the north and east of the Reich were already further from the Roman Curia than the territories in the west and south.
