Luther in Rom und das deutsche kuriale Umfeld

Abstract The magister from Erfurt, Martin Luther, was sent to the Curia in Rome in November 1510 or in the autumn of 1511 with John of Mechelen. Apart from the business of his order, what did he want to achieve for himself in Rome? Whom did he meet, with whom did he speak and in which offices? Did he personally seek clemency at the Curia? Luther’s possible interlocutors are presented, among the hundreds of German curial officials and the suppliants from the Reich, who were documented to be in Rome at the time. Luther himself mentions in Table Talk a licentiatus Liborius Magdeburgensis, whom he may have met in Rome. According to the Rotamanualia (vol. 118, fol. 5v) a Liborius Smid can be traced at the Rota in the years 1519–1521.
