Abstract The present volume includes some articles published previously to draw attention to the treasure trove of petitions (and supplications) registered in the Apostolic Penitentiary. These spontaneous declarations made by people from all estates offer historians new material for their research and provide surprising insights into almost all areas of interest. What are these texts, why and by what means of communication of those times did petitioners from all parts of Christendom turn to the Pope in Rome, and how did supplications come about?
