Abstract In 1416, the city of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) attempted to an ambitious program of industrialization of local textile production, trying to reach the Italian quality standards. In the first twenty years of this experience, local merchants tied themselves to the Italian woolers interested in planting their workshops in the Dalmatian town. In 1434, a municipal law closed the door to foreign investments, reserving the production of wool cloths to the Ragusean citizens. The paper aims to study the mobility of the local workers and craftsmen in their acquisition of technical and managerial skills in the manufacturing cycle.
