Le “Memorie” del cardinale Gasparri e la “Storia documentata della Conciliazione”

Vicissitudini archivistiche di una fonte storica sopravvalutata

The “Memorie” by cardinal Gasparri gave birth to a historiographical ‘mystery’. After resigning as secretary of state in February 1930, the cardinal planned, announced and wrote his autobiography, but it never saw the light. Today, after the Vatican Archives have given access to documents concerning the pontificate of Pope Pius XI we can finally discover the fate of the different versions of the “Memorie”. In addition to his autobiography, cardinal Gasparri also wrote an autonomous work: “Storia documentata della Conciliazione”, whose existence until the 21st century was only hypothesized on the basis of an index discovered in the Central State Archives. The meager content of this work and its scarce historiographical interest reflect Gasparri’s true role in the Conciliation negotiations. Reading the documents also makes it possible to exclude the hypothesis of an alleged encounter between Gasparri and Mussolini in 1921, before the march on Rome.
