Über die Pönitentiarie zur Universität

Abstract The DHI archives offer valuable and mostly unknown biographical information about scholars, magisters and university members from the territory of the German Reich, with the „job offers“ of the medieval church the largest „employer“ of the Middle Ages, giving all „academics“ career opportunities. Graduates were interested in the church’s „pool of benefices“, since the ius canonicum gave them preferential treatment in the allocation of benefices. This is shown by the example of those bound by religious vows engaged in studies, dispensed from the obligation of residency, and by the frequent supplications after „town and gown“ conflicts in university cities.
