This issue on “Sexualities in the Middle Ages: Norms and Deviance, Fantasies and Practices” focuses on how pre-modern societies described, regulated, and imagined sexuality. The contributions take an interdisciplinary and exemplary approach to examining discourses from theology, medicine, law, hagiography, literature, and the visual arts in which ideas of normality and deviance, desire, and physicality were negotiated. Using both well-known and newly discovered sources, they reveal the diversity of sexual orders and practices and open up new perspectives on power, gender, and social structures.
