How Sustainable Is a Short Visit to an Out-of-School Place of Learning and What Are the Alternatives?

Abstract

Since 2020, the school programs in the open-air museum at Kiekeberg have been intensively revised and adapted to the changing requirements of schools. The orientation framework for global development plays a central role here. At the same time, the museum is breaking new ground in educational work. In several cooperations, pupils with special challenges, who are either not integrated into a regular class or are about to complete their special needs school visit, spend a school year in the open-air museum. Here they implement own larger or smaller projects under the guidance of experienced museum educators. The article sheds light on how regular visits to the museum affect schoolchildren and examines the role of continuity of museum visits for sustainability in educational programs.
