Education for Sustainable Development and Global Learning

This article discusses aspects of education for sustainable development in Germany. Based on recent discussions surrounding the Fridays for Future movement, it remembers the long tradition of environmental education, global education and education for sustainable development in German pedagogy and civic education. Non-formal educational initiatives, where questions are often asked more critically than is possible in school settings, are an important part of the spectrum. Finally, this paper considers the role of emotions in civic education, engaging in the current debate on this issue.
