About the Journal
Background
Within Heidelberger Jahrbücher, the spirit and the historical dimension of Heidelberg University will show up. The Heidelberger Jahrbücher, published on behalf of the Gesellschaft der Freunde Universität Heidelberg e.V., focus within each volume on one thematic issue that will be discussed from different perspectives, from different academic disciplines. Their intention is to foster dialogue and contact of scientific disciplines within and outside of Heidelberg University.
Up to Volume 55, all Heidelberger Jahrbücher have been published in print (for a list, see http://digi.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/diglit/hdjbga). Since 2016, the yearbooks have been published online under the new title "Heidelberger Jahrbücher Online" and started with a new volume count. They appear in electronic form and are freely accessible in digital form ("open access"). A printed edition can be obtained from bookstores for a small fee.
Open-Access Policy
This journal follows an Open Access policy, driven by the idea that scientific knowledge should be available freely and world-wide. Authors retain the copyright of their articles under a Creative Commons Licence (CC BY-SA 4.0).
Review
All submitted papers have to undergo a peer-review process that will be organized by the volume editors. For each volume, there are 1 to 3 volume editors who handle the review and production process.

Heidelberger Jahrbücher Online are sponsored and edited by the Gesellschaft der Freunde Universität Heidelberg e.V. Authors do not pay any charges or fees for publication.
Journal History
The Jahrbücher were founded in 1807 by Heidelberg professors under the name Heidelberg Yearbooks of Literature. Interrupted during the two world wars of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945, they have been published without gaps since 1950. In addition to publications from Heidelberg authors, the yearbooks also contain articles on university topics. Since Vol. 43 in 1999, each year a specific interdisciplinary topic has been placed at the center of attention, with representatives of the relevant scientific disciplines working on it.
Since 2003, the yearbooks have been published by the "Gesellschaft der Freunde Universität Heidelberg e.V." as a legal successor to the "Universitätsgesellschaft Heidelberg".
