Axel Michaels is Senior Professor of Classical Indology at the South Asia Institute, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. In 2001, he was elected as the Spokesman of the Collaborative Research Centre SFB 619 “Ritual Dynamics.” From 2007 to 2017, he was one of the Directors of the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context.” Since 2006, he has been Vice President of the Heidelberg Academy of Science and head of the project “Religious and Legal Documents of Pre-modern Nepal.” His current fields of interest are social history and the history of Hinduism, the theory of rituals, life cycle rites of passage in Nepal, and the cultural and legal history of Nepal. His recent book publications include Homo Ritualis. Hindu Ritual and its Significance for Ritual Theory (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2016) and Kultur und Geschichte Nepals (Stuttgart: Kröner Verlag 2018).
