Die neomediävale Grammatik von Fantasywelten

Abstract

This article attempts to capture the central elements of medieval-style fantasy worldbuilding structurally with the support of the concept of a neo-medieval grammar, consisting of syntagmatic and paradigmatic components. As in Tolkien’s ‘mythical grammar’, these structures, figures, and inventories refer eclectically to the literary, mythological, and historical Middle Ages, but in an expanded adaptation, often linked to popular knowledge. With regard to the respective audience, they are geared towards ‘authenticity’ by being enriched with contemporary discourses and practices. In addition, there are paratextual components that reinforce the worldbuilding. The examples used of the proposed grammatical model are taken from a series of the most popular epic fantasy texts by J.R.R. Tolkien, G.R.R. Martin, Andrzej Sapkowski, Markus Heitz, Bernhard Hennen, and Wolfgang Hohlbein.
