Pietro Gasparri, il governo cecoslovacco e la Slovacchia
Abstract: The contribute examines the ecclesiastical-political situation in Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1928 in context of the Kulturkampf in this country, the situation of the Catholic Church in Slovakia, which was traditionally very catholic, and the response of the Holy See to this situation, specially trough the Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri and his typical Realpolitik. In the first part of this study explains the Realpolitik of Pietro Gasparri towards the fall of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire when he had no objection to the formation of the new State of Czechs and Slovaks, authorising on the 9th of November, immediately after the proclamation of Czechoslovakia on 28th October 1918, the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Czechoslovakia. Although the Holy See was willing to negotiate, official diplomatic relations were only implemented on the 15th of May 1920 due to the government of Prague’s anti-Church measures. The author of this study demonstrates how and in what way the Slovaks played the main roll in alleviating the effects of Kulturkampf on the new Czechoslovak republic.
