“Territorium districtus et pertinentie Beneventi”

Abstract In the mid-thirteenth century, at the end of a long conflict between the Papacy and the emperor, it became necessary to redefine and restore the lost boundary between the papal enclave of Benevento and the Kingdom of Sicily. To this end, legates from the Roman Curia travelled to Benevento in the summer of 1272. The transcript of the survey conducted at that time was documented and is preserved in the Vatican Archives. The legates questioned witnesses from Benevento and the surrounding area about the previous and existing border line in 1272. The testimonies provide a heterogeneous picture of border areas and their changes. Artificial and natural landmarks were used as boundary markers in descriptions. Written and oral sources and arguments were used as justification to explain the belonging of these areas to the Benevento territory. This process created a rich source of information that extends significantly beyond a mere boundary line.
