La (ri)costruzione della frontiera transadriatica del Regno di Sicilia sotto Carlo I d’Angiò. Moventi, uomini e mezzi

Abstract This chapter presents the construction of a trans-Adriatic frontier for the Kingdom of Sicily and the Angevin expansion in Epirus and Albania under Charles I of Anjou as an undertaking inspired mainly by domestic political and economic considerations of the Kingdom. The use of sources such as administrative and accounting documents clearly helps us to interpret events in this sense and highlights how long results remained in place after Charles’ reign. He set the example by attributing great importance to the towns of the eastern Adriatic coast, in Epirus and Albania, of course, but later also in Dalmatia: an obsession transmitted to his successors in Naples as well as in Hungary, for whom the Adriatic would go on to be one of the key elements of their political, economic, and military activity.
