Texte und Kontext eines kulturellen Zusammenstoßes

Die Invektiven von Bartolomeo Facio und Lorenzo Valla (Neapel, 1445–48)

Abstract The chronological analysis of this important controversy of Italian humanism allows us to present its cultural and historical context, its dynamics and development. Facio’s invectives retained their original purpose of promoting him to court historian and discrediting Valla. As a result, they are preserved only in collected manuscripts. In contrast, Valla’s ‘Antidotum’ against Facio underwent a transformation due to his move to Rome. The polemic became a linguistic treatise that was handed down together with the famous ‘Elegantie’.
